What is Immunotherapy?

Beacon Advocates Blog Posts - What is Immunotherapy

June is Cancer Immunotherapy Month. According to the American Association for Cancer Research, cancer immunotherapy refers to treatments that can unlock the power of a patient’s immune system to fight his or her cancer. Decades of scientific research have provided us with in-depth insight into the immune system and how it interacts with cancer cells. Cancer Immunotherapy can treat many different types of cancer. It can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy and/or other cancer treatments. Different types of immunotherapy work in different ways. For example, some cancer immunotherapy treatments enable the immune system to stop or slow the growth of cancer cells. While others enable the immune system to destroy or stop the cancer cells from spreading to other areas of the body. Treatment schedules, doses, and the type of immunotherapy will vary greatly depending on the type of cancer, size, location, age of the patient, general health, and body weight. It is recommended to discuss potential treatment options and decisions with your doctor and cancer care advocate. Click HERE for more information on Cancer Immunotherapy.
